Carmel Bay at the Golden Hour
A commissioned 9ft x 10 ft mural painted on a north wall inside the office of the Arts Council of Monterey County.
This mural was done as a large scale interpretation of a plein aire painting done along the edge of Carmel Bay weeks earlier. It is meant to bring vibrance and energy to an otherwise plain and drab workspace.

These artworks began as solar prints, then the layering began with ink, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and pastels…
They all serve as memories of different times of day hiking along the edge of the Pacific coast In Big Sur, California.

These artworks started as monotypes or prints, then layers of pastel, colored pencil, wax crayons, ink, colored wax, collage, and paint were added to build up the surface with layers and texture. They reflect the many facets and moods of Monterey Bay.
Out in the open drawing near and far, in some of my favorite places, quickly recording the sense of place.
I was fortunate to live out an artist’s dream and paint in the south of France one summer. Immersed in the environment of my favorite masters, I found the scenery both inspiring and familiar to my native state, California. The approach in these "plein air" pieces is intuitive. I apply color in place rather than analyze each individual object or feature. Working in a quick and decisive manner, the resulting pieces are a reflection of my experience outside in the landscape, capturing ephemeral moments of light.
My most important mentor, Gregory Kondos http://gregorykondos.com/bio.htm, led me to this school in Aix-en-Provence https://www.themarchutzschool.com/… I really began to see here and scratch the surface of what I am capable of artistically. Because of this program, with the guidance from my teachers Alan Roberts, John Gasparach, and Greg Wyatt, I had a breakthrough. It changed my life!
